Are You Superstitious?

Well, this Friday is Friday the 13th!  Where did all of the “Friday the 13th” superstition come from anyway?  Is this a day we should be weary of?  Well, folklore that has been passed on shows that 13 is an unlucky number and Friday’s an unlucky day.  I don’t know about that one!  I think everyone looks forward to Fridays!  It seems to be the best day of the week for many!  It’s said that Jesus was crucified on Friday.  It turns out that “Black” Friday has even been associated with stock market crashes since the 1800’s and other disasters as well.  Maybe just coincidence?

I was amazed to discover that the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina quoted that it’s estimated that 17 to 21 MILLION people in the U.S. are fearful of this day!  Some of these people don’t even get out of bed and avoid normal routines!  Wow!  The actual technical name of the fear of Friday the 13th is “paraskavedekatriaphobia” which stems from the Greek.

For several centuries, Friday was known as “Witches’ Sabbath” in Scandinavia. There is a mythological story stating that Friday is named for the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility, “Frigga”.  When the Germanic and Norse tribes converted to Christianity, the goddess of love was cast out in shame to a mountaintop and called a witch! They thought that every Friday, the vengeful Frigga held a meeting with eleven other witches, including the devil (which would make this a gathering of thirteen) to conspire bad fate for the coming week.
