May Stalkers Beware!

I started going to the gym with my friend Jane to kick off our new years resolution.  As we pedaled away on our bicycle cardio warm up, she told me that she’s been single for 3 years this week!

I remember when Jane and her buff built husband Bill came over to our house to break in our hot tub.  Bill did a lot of the talking that night.  Jane had asked me a question about an hour into our conversation, and Bill started to elaborate.  Well, Jane told Bill that she wanted to hear me answer the question because he was talking most of the night.  Now instead of just brushing that off, he got really quiet.  She then told us that she thinks they should be heading home.

We let them go inside to shower while we covered the hot tub.  As we started to go back into our house from the back patio, we heard a rumbling sound.  We see Jane fly out of the bathroom as the door swings open saying “call 911″!  He’s running right after her chasing her out of our house.  My husband started to run after them, and he saw Bill punch her in the face in their truck!

We managed to get them to come back inside to try and help them cool off.  We talked to them for a good two hours, then thought we could let them go.  We received a phone call about 15 minutes later from the Sheriff’s office asking if our friends Jane and Bill were at our house and if they were arguing.  He wouldn’t tell us what happened, so I told him what had happened.

The next day she called me and told me that when they had stopped at a red light that just happened to be in front of the Sheriff’s station, she apologized to him.  He thought she said it in a snotty tone of voice, so he smashed the windshield of their truck with his fist!  She then jumped out of the truck, and ran through a ditch to get to the Sheriff’s station.

He ran after her and twisted his ankle in the ditch, so she managed to escape.  She tried the front door of the station, and to her surprise it wouldn’t open.  She then tried a few other doors around the building, and finally the last one she got to opened.  She told the officer that she felt that her husband had a little too much to drink and she didn’t want to stay the night with him being drunk.  I was shocked that she didn’t tell them what really happened, but it turns out that since he was a fireman in the same county, she wanted to protect his job and disposition!

She is a very fit, smart and attractive woman.  He started out by being verbally abusive.  Even though she is a beautiful smart woman, he would tell her she was ugly and stupid, and just break her self esteem down to nothing.  I can’t go on and use the profanities, but I’m sure you can imagine all the nasty mean things he could have said to her.  He said things to her that she would have never said to him because she truly loved him and would never have said anything to hurt him.

From a man who used to treat her like a queen, he slowly progressed to blaming her for every little thing, even though it may not have been her fault.  He started fights about every stupid minuscule thing.  It was completely ridiculous.  Once he started being physically abusive, unlike many other women in her situation, she realized that life was too short to put up with him.  He was set in his ways.  He said he would change, but he just couldn’t.  He was just rotten whether he was drunk or sober.

Jane told me that he had been stalking her and causing problems for her at work, etc.  She had to use her stun gun on him when he tried to attack her as she got out of her car to go to work.  He never bothered with her again after he found out she protected herself.  She did get a restraining order, but that piece of paper is  not always the only means of protection.  Some just may not care.  I am telling you about Jane’s story as January is National Stalking Awareness Month.
